Event-Triggered Conversion Timer & Dynamic Content

Drive action with exclusive, fleeting offers. This per-user timer triggers dynamic content the moment a countdown starts - ensuring your scarcity is relevant, high-impact, and authentically tied to each visitor's journey.
countdown starts on first

Create a true sense of urgency tailored to each visitor’s specific actions by pairing a countdown timer with shifting content versions.

This feature allows you to trigger a 24-hour countdown (or any duration you choose) the moment a specific event occurs – such as a first visit, a product view, or product purchase. While the timer is active, If-So displays your “Limited-Time” version (like a discount banner or a special bonus). The moment the clock hits zero, the content automatically swaps to your “Standard” version, ensuring the offer is no longer accessible.

Because the timer is tied to the individual user’s session, the urgency remains consistent across every page they visit.

Use cases

  • The “New Subscriber” Bonus: The moment a user signs up for your newsletter, trigger a 15-minute countdown for a “One-Time Offer” on their first purchase. The timer keeps the offer exclusive to that specific moment of high engagement.
  • Post-Purchase Upsell: Immediately after a product purchase, trigger a 10-minute timer for a “Related Add-on” at 50% off. Once the timer hits zero, the upsell page automatically redirects back to the standard “Thank You” page.
  • Abandoned Cart Recovery: If a user visits the checkout but doesn’t buy, trigger a 4-hour “Free Shipping” window. While the timer is active, they see a sticky top bar; once it expires, the bar vanishes.
  • The “Flash Sale” Product Page: Set a timer to start the first time a user views a specific high-value product. Show a “Limited Stock Reserve” message for 30 minutes to encourage an immediate decision.
  • Lead Magnet Expiration: After a user downloads a free guide, start a 48-hour countdown for a discounted “Pro Version” or a “Discovery Call.” The discount link only works while the timer is active.

For Digital Agencies

Position “Automated Urgency Funnels” as a high-conversion strategy for your clients. A. It’s an easy-to-demonstrate win: you can show exactly how many users converted during the “Timer Active” window versus the standard page performance, proving your agency’s direct impact on their bottom line.

The ROI Connection: Authentic Scarcity Drives Action

Generic countdowns often get ignored, but a timer that starts specifically because of a user’s action creates a powerful psychological “nudge.”

By automating the transition between a “Limited-Time” offer and your “Standard” content, you maintain total brand integrity. This approach leads to:

  • Higher Conversion Density: Forcing a decision within a specific window significantly reduces “window shopping.”
  • Increased Average Order Value (AOV): Users are more likely to add more to their cart when a time-sensitive bonus is on the line.
  • Reduced Ad Waste: When you drive traffic to a page with a personalized timer, you maximize the value of every click by creating an immediate reason to convert.

Step-by-step

Video guide (raw version):

Step #1: Create a Countdown Timer

  1. Install the Extension: Ensure both If-So and the countdown extension are installed and active
  2. Configure the Timer: On your WordPress dashboard, go to If-So > Countdowns
  3. Set the countdown type: Choose “Timer” under the Countdown Type
  4. Define the Trigger: Under “Start Time,” select “User’s first visit.”
  5. Set the Duration: Enter your desired countdown length (e.g., 24 hours).
  6. Copy the Shortcode: Save the countdown and copy the generated shortcode to your clipboard.

Step #2. Display Dynamic Content During the Countdown

To show specific content (like a discount banner) only while the clock is ticking:

  1. Create a New Trigger: Go to If-So > Add New Trigger.
  2. Select the Condition: From the condition dropdown, choose “Countdown.”
  3. Link the Timer: Paste the exact same countdown shortcode you created in Step 1 into the Condition field of Version A.
  4. Set the Active Content: In the content field of version A, add the message or offer you want to show while the timer is running.
  5. Set the Expired Content: Use the Default Content field for the message that should appear once the timer ends (or leave it blank to show nothing).
  6. Publish & Deploy: Click Publish, then paste the Trigger Shortcode into your website where you want the content to appear.
